Ancient Liberty

An interesting factor of  the ancient world was liberty in cities like Athens. The Athenian view of liberty is one that differs greatly with most modern people’s view on liberty. The modern view of liberty contains ideas like free speech, private property, and freedom of the press. We as individuals should be free to do as we want, as long as what we do does not infringe on someone else’s freedom. Ancient liberty was based on the community. Citizens had a say in the making of every decision for the community. This means that nobody has any individual rights, because what you believe is your right one-day could be uprooted by the community the next day. One major example of this would be Ostracism. Ostracism was when a majority of the people decided that someone should be banished, because they are or could be a nuisance in the future.
