The Age of Moderate Reform

Pope Leo the IXWhat was the Moderate Reform? Pope Leo the IX was a German Pope who wanted to root out simony (which was the buying and selling of church offices) and several other church scandals. He held many counsels where he emphasized the power that the Pope should have over these areas. Laymen where people who were not ordained by the church. These Laymen were involved in the choosing of church clerics. The men who the Laymen were choosing were very incompetent. Thus the pope urged laymen to choose more reliable clerics. This age of Moderate Reform would transition into the age of Radical Reform. During the┬áRadical Reform┬áreligious leaders of the Western Roman Empire started to raise a very important question. “Why are laymen choosing church clerics at all?”
