Urban’s Speech

Pope_Urban_IIThe Byzantine Empire was under attack from the ruthless Muslims. They had tried their hardest with no avail to cast out the Muslims. Thus they sent a message to the Holy Roman Empire requesting help against these invading marauders. Hearing the Byzantine Empire’s cry for help, Pope Urban the II delivered a rousing speech urging Roman men to bear arms against the Muslim army and take back the lands which they had stolen. He had so influenced his listeners that they cried out, “It is the will of God! It is the will of God!” This phrase touched the Roman Pontiff’s heart so dearly that he stated “When an armed attack is made upon the enemy, let this one cry be raised by all the soldiers of God: It is the will of God! It is the will of God!” In 1096 AD the first crusade of the Holy Roman Empire set out to reclaim the land that was stolen from the Byzantine Empire by the Muslims.
