The Magna Carta

Magna chartaThe Magna Carta was the first document given to King John I of England by his feudal barons in 1215 AD, which stated that the king is under the law as well as the people of England. The English barons were outraged because King John I was ruling England in such a way that was oppressive and contrary to tradition. He had raised taxes to inconceivable levels. He had waged wars against multiple foes including the Roman Church and France. He also gave England to the Roman Church in a way that would make England the Church’s vassal and the Church would become England’s lord. Therefore the barons made King John sign a document called the Magna Carta. This document would keep the king in check by stating that all the kings of England are under the law and must keep their decisions in line with tradition.
