Frederick Barbarossa

barbarossaFrom 1100 AD to 1300 AD there was a significant amount of friction between the Emperors of the Holy Roman Empire and the Popes. An example of this conflict was Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Frederick (like many emperors before him) wanted plenty of land and power. With this idea in mind he opted to conquer the Lombardi People. In this era the Lombard Land was located in upper Italy. The Lombardi citizens feared the might of Frederick and they looked to Pope Alexander III to protect them. The Pope hastened to help the Lombardi people and what ensued was a massive conflict between the Emperor and the Pope. The Pope ended up victorious in this struggle and Frederick was forced to reconcile his attacks against the Lombardi people.
